Killing and Letting Die
I have several criticisms of James Rachels thought experiment on the moral identity of killing and letting die in his article "Active and Passive Euthanasia". To summarise the thought experiement, two men desire the death of their respective six-year-old nephews in order to gain an inheritence. They know their nephews are bathing, so they intend to go into the bathroom and drown them. The first man enters the bathroom and drowns his nephew. The second man enters the bathroom and notices that his nephew is drowning already from hitting his head, so he stands and watches. The intuition this is intended to evoke is that these acts are morally equivalent, and that there is therefore no difference between killing and letting die.

What do i think about euthanasia?

Euthanasia is the process of painlessly helping a terminally ill person to die also known as assisted suicide or mercy killing.

Propose

Quality of Life: The pain and suffering a person feels during a disease, even with pain relievers, can be incomprehensible to a person who has not gone through it so therefore it is acceptable to just terminate his/her life in order for him to stop from suffering.

Economics cost and human resource:
Today in many countries there is a shortage of hospital space. The energy of doctors and hospital beds could be used for people whose lives could be saved instead of continuing the life of those who want to die which increases the general quality of care and shortens hospital waiting lists. It is a burden to keep people alive past the point they can contribute to society.

Oppose

Moral: Some people treats euthanasia to be a type of murder and voluntary euthanasia as a type of suicide. Many argue that quality of life is an issue, while those on the other side believe life must be preserved at all costs.

Necessity: If there is some reason to believe the cause of a patient's illness or suffering is or will soon be curable, the correct action is sometimes considered to attempt to bring about a cure or engage in palliative care.

Theological: Voluntary euthanasia has often been rejected as a violation of the sanctity of human life. No one have the right to interfere with a person's right to die, no one but God has the authority to determine when a person is to die. It should be by the wish of the patients himself however in many issues government itself decide someone's life cost.

Euthanasia

Euthanasia is the practice of medClassification of Euthanasia

Euthanasia by consent
Euthanasia may be conducted with consent (voluntary euthanasia) or without consent (involuntary euthanasia). Since involuntary euthanasia is conducted without an individual's specifically given acquiescence, in the opinion of some this equates involuntary euthanasia to murder. Involuntary euthanasia may be conducted when the person is incapable of making a decision and it is thus left to a proxy. Euthanasia by proxy consent is highly controversial, especially because multiple proxies may claim the authority to decide for the patient. While voluntary euthanasia is euthanasia with the person’s direct consent it is still controversial for reasons discussed below.
[1]

Euthanasia by means
Euthanasia may be conducted passively, non-aggressively, and aggressively. Passive euthanasia entails the withholding of common treatments (such as antibiotics, pain medications, or surgery) or the distribution of a medication (such as morphine) to relieve pain , knowing that it may also result in death. Passive euthanasia is the most accepted form, and it is a common practice in most hospitals. Non-aggressive euthanasia entails the withdrawing of life support and is more controversial. Aggressive euthanasia entails the use of lethal substances or forces to kill and is the most controversial means.

Other designations
Some important designations of euthanasia consists of mercy killing, animal ethnusia. The Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) states that euthanasia is "to kill an animal painlessly, and without distress.

Reasons given for voluntary euthanasia:
Choice: Proponents of VE emphasize that choice is a fundamental principle for liberal democracies and free market systems.
[1]
Quality of Life: The pain and suffering a person feels during a disease, even with pain relievers, can be incomprehensible to a person who has not gone through it. Even without considering the physical pain, it is often difficult for patients to overcome the emotional pain of losing their independence.
[1] Moreover, despite modern painkillers, there is little available to deal with the problem of 'breathlessness', which makes many ailing patients feel they will suffocate.[18]
Economic costs and human resources: Today in many countries there is a shortage of hospital space. The energy of doctors and hospital beds could be used for people whose lives could be saved instead of continuing the life of those who want to die which increases the general quality of care and shortens hospital waiting lists. It is a burden to keep people alive past the point they can contribute to society.
[19]
Pressure: All the arguments against voluntary euthanasia can be used by society to form a terrible and continuing psychological pressure on people to continue living for years against their better judgment. One example of this pressure is the risky and painful methods that those who genuinely wish to die would otherwise need to use, such as hanging

Reasons given against voluntary euthanasia:
Professional role: Critics argue that voluntary euthanasia could unduly compromise the professional roles of health care employees, especially doctors. They point out that European physicians of previous centuries traditionally swore some variation of the Hippocratic Oath which in its ancient form excluded euthanasia: "To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death.." However, since the 1970s, this oath has largely fallen out of use.
Moral: Some people consider euthanasia of some or all types to be morally unacceptable.
[1] This view usually treats euthanasia to be a type of murder and voluntary euthanasia as a type of suicide, the morality of which is the subject of active debate.
Theological: Voluntary euthanasia has often been rejected as a violation of the sanctity of human life. Specifically, some Christians argue that human life ultimately belongs to God, so that humans should not be the ones to make the choice to end life. Orthodox Judaism takes basically the same approach, however, it is more open minded, and does, given certain circumstances, allow for euthanasia to be exercised under passive or non-aggressive means. Accordingly, some theologians and other religious thinkers consider voluntary euthanasia (and suicide generally) as sinful acts, i.e. unjustified killings.
Feasibility of implementation: Euthanasia can only be considered "voluntary" if a patient is mentally competent to make the decision, i.e., has a rational understanding of options and consequences. Competence can be difficult to determine or even define.

Euthanasia is the practice of medically-assisted death. It is illegal in most countries.
It is a controversial subject, not only because there are many different moral dilemmas associated with it, but also in what constitutes its definition. At the extreme ends of disagreement, advocates say euthanasia, also known as physician aid in dying, or physician assisted suicide, is a merciful method of death. At the other end are opponents of euthanasia, who may consider this method as a form of murder.
The term euthanasia comes from the Greek words "eu” and “thanatos” which combined means “well death” or "dying well".

Pain and suffering are part of being human. It is what makes us strong.

There are 2 types of euthanasia:

  • Active Euthanasia- occurs when the medical professionals, or another person, deliberately do something that causes the patient to die.
Doctors are urging health regulators to consider allowing the "active euthanasia" of severely disabled newborn babies. "active euthanasia" should be considered for the overall benefit of families who would otherwise suffer years of emotional and financial suffering.

  • Passive Euthanasia - occurs when the patient dies because the medical professionals either don't do something necessary to keep the patient alive, or when they stop doing something that is keeping the patient alive.

Euthanasia is generally classified as either "active" or "passive", and as either "voluntary" or "involuntary". Similar to euthanasia is "assisted suicide".

"Passive euthanasia" is usually defined as withdrawing medical treatment with the deliberate intention of causing the patient's death. For example, if a patient requires kidney dialysis to survive, and the doctors disconnect the dialysis machine, the patient will presumably die fairly soon. Perhaps the classic example of passive euthanasia is a "do not resuscitate order". Normally if a patient has a heart attack or similar sudden interruption in life functions, medical staff will attempt to revive them. If they make no such effort but simply stand and watch as the patient dies, this is passive euthanasia.

"Active euthanasia" is taking specific steps to cause the patient's death, such as injecting the patient with poison. In practice, this is usually an overdose of pain-killers or sleeping pills.

now u have know what is euthanasia!! But lets talk about it. No matter which side you are in, agree or disagree~Its about a person life and death.

I have once heard of a story abt coma.
I'm sure everyone is familiar to a saying "MONEY is everything"

well..here's something about euthanasia that may support that saying~Yes, like always i'm going ta write a story again, but this story was read very long time ago. i can only remembered the brief of it .

There was a girl who was in coma. And the doctor said that they were unsure about when would she awakes. Thats a horror truth. Because the giel maybe in this state for one day?one week? one month?or maybe ten years! well the point is that her parents are not very wealthy. Yes, that's where money comes in. Her parents wanted to let her survived because they hoped that she would awake the next secong. They held hope for the next few months, working hard to pay for the bills for their daughters life. But it wasn't enough, in the end they lose hope as they couldn't cope with the heavy finacial burden. Yes, the tragic happens, they began to give up on their daughters life and well..let her die.

Short story but a stunning one for me. Its inscripted into my brain when i heard this story. It's too sad~ anyway, the news have caused an uproar. Some says that the parents have no heart and all. But some thinks its understandable. I stand in the parents side and i never regret it. Its too heavy for them. But sometimes a thought strucks me 'what if she awakes when the parents did not made such a sad and cruel decision?"the daughter may have married and have a happy life" sometimes its better not to think of these stuffs.

That' a form of euthanasia. And that's why its a debatable and VERY sensitive issue.
