OBESITY AND FAD DIET

What is It?

Obesity is a condition in which the natural energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of humans and other mammals, exceeds healthy limits. It is commonly defined as a body mass index (weight divided by height squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher.

How serious is it in Brunei

Statistics compiled by the School Health Services found that the Belait District has the highest number of overweight pupils, followed by the Temburong, Brunei Muara and Tutong Districts. The study also showed a slight increase in obese pupils in the Belait District last year compared to 2001.

Addressing Obesity in global matter

1. The World Health Organization (WHO) is a key institution at this level. It’s global strategy in this area focuses on developing food and agricultural policies that are aligned to promoting public health and multisectorial policies that promote physical activity, as well as generally being an information provider.
2. A joint program of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, the experience of the
Codex Alimentarius Commission highlights the challenges at international level.

How can spot a Fad Diet?
You can spot a fad diet by asking yourself a few simple questions:

1.Does this diet say that some foods are completely off-limits?
2.Does this diet promise that I will lose an unrealistic amount of weight in a short amount of time?
3.Are there any “good” or “bad” foods in this diet?
4.Do I have to buy the food for this diet at a special store?
5.Does this diet tell me that I do not have to exercise?
6.Is this plan temporary or is it something I can do for life?

If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you have probably spotted a Fad Diet!

Do They Work?

While some people do lose weight when following a fad diet, it is important to remember that the weight loss is usually temporary and most of these eating plans can be harmful to your body. Most of these fad diets are hard to stay on. This means that you can’t stick with them for long and once you stop following the diet, you will probably gain back the weight you lost
